Castaween

Late October in Gràcia doesn't pick between Halloween and La Castanyada, it does both. Around here, people call the mashup "Castaween": costumes and candy alongside roasted chestnuts, panellets, and the other, quieter traditions of Catalonia's own autumn holiday.

Plaza del Sol sits right in the middle of it. Expect decorated storefronts, kids trick-or-treating shop to shop, and at least one local business leaning fully into the spooky-meets-traditional spirit of the season.

What's actually being celebrated

La Castanyada is the real local tradition, tied to Tots Sants (All Saints' Day, November 1st): roasted chestnuts sold from street stalls, panellets (small marzipan sweets), roasted sweet potato, and a glass of sweet wine. Halloween is the newer, imported half of the pairing, costumes and candy, now genuinely popular here too, especially with kids. Castaween is just the informal name for celebrating both at once, which Gràcia does more enthusiastically than most Barcelona neighborhoods.

On Plaza del Sol in 2026

Oso Grizzly Bakery & Coffee, right on the plaza, is decorating for the occasion, selling traditional panellets alongside spookier seasonal treats, and giving out candy to costumed kids on the 31st.

Beyond the plaza, look out for CastaHalloween, the shop-to-shop trick-or-treat route along Travessera de Gràcia, plus street parties (Carrer Mozart, Carrer Perill, Carrer Llibertat, and Carrer Verdi del Mig all held their own last year) on several of the roads that decorate for the Festa Major every August, and civic center events across the neighborhood for younger kids.
